I am looking at having my counter tops re-done and I want Granite, but I recall seeing some other material used that was just as good and I remember it looking very nice too.
Was it concrete counter tops? What else is available on the market that is durable and can handle hot pans on it without worrying about cracking?

Concrete tops are a very good choice. You can buy molds and kits online for doing them. They are just as durable as granite if not more and they can be acid stained to look very similar to marble or granite. If you were to do it yourself I guess it would cost $10 per square foot or less for all materials. Whereas granite and marble are $35-$50 per square foot.
